Your Excellency,
Please accept our esteem compliments to you and your government for the contribution of peace in Aceh for the last 16 years and in other parts of the world.
Allow me to introduce myself and kindly bear with me a moment of your precious time.
My name is Bakhtiar Abdullah, an Achehnese now a Swedish citizen living in Stockholm for the last 39 years, also the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) spokesperson. I was also one of the members of the GAM Negotiating Team during the negotiations with the Indonesian government (GoI) that lead to the signing of the Peace Accord - Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Helsinki, Finland mediated by the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) and supported by the member EU states. It also ended the three decades armed conflict in Aceh between GAM fighters and the Indonesian armed forces (TNI).
In fact, the Head of the Aceh Monitoring Mission in Aceh was Mr. Pieter Feith, a Dutch high ranking military offcial supported by other European and ASEAN officials to monitor the peace process for a year.
Unfortunately, the implementation of the MoU so far has not been fully implemented and the Acehnese are beginning to lose patience. The isssue of Aceh is political and has not been fully resolved until today. Even the special regulations for Aceh is being ’decapitated’ and new laws according to the central government is being imposed. The list is long. But the fact is Jakarta is ”pulling back the strings” after 16 years. There is no monitoring mechanism since the AMM withdrew from Aceh in 2006, and the full implementation of the MoU is yet to be realised.
As a member of the EU, we believe that your government could play a vital role in maintaining peace and stability in Aceh, as well as in the region of Southeast Asia.
Finally, today coincided with the Declaration of War between the Kingdom of the Netherlands upon the Kingdom of Aceh which led to the longest colonial war ever in Southeast Asia between Holland and Aceh as recorded by many Dutch historians and other international annals. I believe that you are aware of the long history between our two nations from 1873 both before and after that. And it is commonly and widely known that whenever there is declaration of war there is also the end of declaration of war which is being practiced by the international community. Therefore, we kindly seek your co-operation to review this matter with your government so that eternal peace could be restored for the Acehnese to live as an independent and dignified nation as any other nation in the world.
